The Arlington Sunrise Lions Club was formed in 1976 as part of Lions International. Lions Clubs are locally-based service groups that perform a wide variety of activities. Their two main objectives are sight and hearing conservation and services, but their also perform other projects with a local slant. The Lions' object is to involve people in community-based service programs that have immediate impact on those in need. Lions Clubs are unique because of their hands-on and local orientation.
The Sunrise Club met the demand in the county for a Lions Club that had breakfast meetings, as opposed to mid-day or evening meetings. It was thought that a breakfast club would attract retired or semi-retired people who could attend those sorts of meetings. The Sunrise Club originally started with 28 members and in its first few years grew slightly.
