Handwritten meeting minutes for the first meeting of the Arlington Council of Church Women, later Church Women United. Temporary officers elected and first decisions made about dues and initial activities of the group.

Forty six representative women from sixteen of the forty evangelical churches of Arlington, met at St. George’s Episcopal Church Thursday, January 20th, 1944, to discuss organizing the Arlington Council of Church Women. A devotional service was led by the Rev. Stanley E. Ashton, pastor of St. George’s. After some discussion a rising vote was taken on the question of organizing. The vote was in the affirmative. Mrs. F. W. Havenkamp of the new Presbyterian Church on N. Washington Blvd. was elected temporary secretary.
Mrs. Lee A Peller of Bethel Evangelical and Reformed Church was nominated and elected temporary President. Mrs. M. P. Ayers of the Cherrydale Methodist, temporary 1st Vice Pres. Mrs. M. W. Witt of the Wilson Blvd. Christian was elected temporary treasurer. It was moved and carried that area chairmen be selected to plan for the World Day of Prayer, February 25. Mrs. Walter Handy of the Arlington Presbyterian was appointed chairman of the committee. A motion was carried to invite the women of the negro [sic[ Churches to participate in the World Day of Prayer Services. The following were appointed area chairman: Miss Eneora [sic] Jacobs of St. George’s; Mrs. T. G. Betackler of Calvary Methodist, Aurora Hills; Mrs. C. P. Hein of Arlington Methodist, Columbia Pike; Mrs. Ellsworth Minor of Grace Episcopal, Cherrydale. Mrs. Guy A. Ramsdell, Westover Presbyterian and Mrs. M. W. Witt of Wilson Blvd. Christian were appointed to arrange a meeting for young mothers. An offering of $7.77 was taken up. Registration cards were taken up and given to Mrs. Handy.
Dr. H. O. Myers of Clarendon Methodist gave a talk on religious education in the public school. Rev. Lee A. Peeler gave the closing prayer. Meeting adjourned.
